PMI has done it. They have changed the exam pattern and this will be effective from 30-Aug-2011. This decision has been taken based on the analysis of the results of a Role Delineation Study.

What has not changed?

  • The exam is still based on PMBOK GUIDE 4th edition
  • Eligibility criteria is still the same
What has changed?
  • Instead of 6 areas of the testing will be only based on the 5 process groups
  • The 6th area , which is the Professional Responsibility, will not be tested separately but will be integrated into each of the 5 process groups , which are Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling and Closing
  • To this effect about 30% of the exam content is expected to change.
This is actually good and is in line with the reality.
As a matter of fact I have been stressing upon this point to my students always, that PR is an integral part of the any management activity and I always did teach this upfront.

Finally, even though it says 30% changes, it is only to the exam contents not to the PMBOK content. So as long as you understand concepts within PMBOK and PMI Code of ethics, You may not want to invest on more printed material.

Thanks for this info.

Can you give me an example of how PR questions can be formatted within a Process Group based question?

Example:

You are the project manager of a software project which has been delivered to the customer and he has accepted all the deliverables and have signed off. The management has decided to re-allocate the entire team to other projects. You maintain that the lessons learnt have not yet been documented, and part of the team is required for this activity. Management does not want anyone to waste time in this activity. Which of the following best describes the situation?

a. Management is right because they have to plan for the future project and lessons learnt can be completed later during lean period.
b. You are right because lessons learnt is a project deliverable
c. Management is wrong because they don't control any of the resources and need not worry about future projects
d. You are wrong because you cannot question managements decision
